RCCP Accepts Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Historic Preservation

RCCP received this year’s Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Historic Preservation for the restoration of the William Peace family plot at City Cemetery. It took our non-profit 9 years to raise $90,000 to restore the massive stone walls, replicate the fence at a Virginia foundry, and repair four grave markers for William Peace and his family members. A community leader and philanthropist, William Peace left money and land to establish a Presbyterian college for women after he died in 1865. Jane Thurman, Dave Permar, Betsy Shaw, Emily Grant were present at the ceremony on October 16, 2018. Terry Harper, Betsy Haywood, John A George, Gaston Williams, Sandra Walker, Orrin Haywood, Ray Hinnant, and Lucy Pittman could not attend.
