Award for Mount Hope Cemetery GIS Mapping

KCI Associates Geospatial Solutions staff provided mapping and data collection of 1,500 grave sites located within the 11-acre historic section of Mount Hope Cemetery, a public African-American cemetery. The project recorded locations, birth and death dates and military history for the interred individuals to share the data on a public website.

Work challenges included summer temperatures, an 11-acre hilly site, and initial issues with data storage and battery power for tablet field devices. KCI, a civil engineering firm, used an innovative application for storage; crafted a custom software after data failed to upload properly, and accessed an accurate and public U.S. Satellite Based Augmentation System. KCI won an American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina Honors Award for the project in 2016
